The Bake Skills Nationals - Media Update

"Football, Meat Pies, Kangaroos & Holden cars"

You remember the song! Well put w/ c September 21 in your diaries now, because that's the week that, to paraphrase former test cricket captain, Bill Lawry...."it's all happening"... in Melbourne this year!!!

Football:         Well, there's this little event called the AFL grand final happening at the MCG at the end of that week!

Meat Pies:     Yes...there will literally be "heaps" of them...not only at the official Great Aussie Meat Pie competition...but also at this year's Bake Skills Australia National Teams Competition where 4 young State teams will each prepare six (6) "traditional great Aussie pies" for judging by the GAMP judges, as part of 3 intensive days of competition in search of those coveted green Bake Skills Australia champion's blazers (and a trip to Singapore!).

Where's "it all happening"?

The Bake Skills Nationals will be conducted at 2 locations for the first 2 days...

  • The William Angliss Institute - where the competition production includes plain & fruit doughs, damper, organic sourdough, ciabatta, brioche, danish pastries and yeast raised donuts, and
  • The Fine Food Australia exhibition - where teams will create, make, decorate and display cold Set Cheese Cakes; 3/4 puff strudel; Pativiers & Fruit Bandes; assorted "creative puff pastries"; great Aussie Pies; Lemon Meringue Pie; Gingerbread & gingerbread Shapes...and an un-iced wedding cake base
  • On Day 3 (Wednesday, Sept 24), all teams will be at Fine Foods where they'll spend a hectic day producing a creative bread model; 2 x chocolate innovation mousse cakes and a gingerbread feature. Teams will also have to design & create 4 x identical plated desserts from a mystery box of ingredients they receive the day before and decorate their feature wedding cake.

In addition to the 4 competing teams -

  • A chocolate expert from Callebaut chocolate will be demonstrating some of the finer aspects of chocolate making and will be available to field any questions you have on chocolate.
  • Queensland COOKON sales will have their latest pastry display cabinet on show to see
  • EOI's Ashley Gurney will be available to field questions on shortenings, fats & oil,
  • Moffat will be displaying their Rotel oven, together with a range of mixers & dough break.
  • A range of information & samples will be available from all Event Partners & supporting company's including Van Den Berghs; Kerry Pinnacle;
  • Free copies of Leading Edge Magazine's latest edition will also be available.
